The real reason you feel so busy (and what to do about it)

The Paradox of Busyness and Strategic Thinking

In today’s fast-paced world, being busy is often seen as a status symbol, equating busyness with importance and achievement. However, this mindset can have downsides. Studies reveal that while 97% of leaders agree that long-term strategic thinking is critical for success, 96% admit they don’t have time for it. The reasons? Overwhelming meetings, constant emails, and a cultural attachment to busyness as a badge of honor.

Research suggests that busyness can also be a coping mechanism, helping people avoid uncertainty or uncomfortable questions about their careers and personal lives. To break this cycle, we must get honest about our motivations, create space for reflection, and redefine freedom as choosing how we spend our time intentionally.

Coaching & Leadership Development is my passion and I combine this with Change Management and Leading Transformations in profit and non-profit organizations. Having been an operations manager myself, I do understand implications on the floor in larger scale transformations. I have 35+ years of experience, worked in global corporates and had various leadership positions, incl. C-Suite level. I have practiced what I preach, and also add today's insights from the latest research. I am a member of HBR Advisory Council.
