Why I wrote this book
I wrote the VUCA Leadership Survival Guide (not this workbook!) in the last 6 months and made it as practical but also as complete as possible, based on the following design principles:
- Readers usually have and take little time to read, if you are not recognizing this you most likely already read books on similar subjects.
- You are best helped by describing the VUCA situations that most books and training programs ignore.
- Bullet points are key and help a structured way of reading, the downside is I could not go into the level of detail I wanted to.
- The upside of the previous point is that it leaves space for you, to fill in your experiences and knowledge you already have.
- I wanted to keep it low-budget so did not spend money on ISBN numbers or making a fancy e-book, I kept it as a pdf document.
- I did use ChatGPT for making it consistent and ensuring I write more about the things ChatGPT does not mention with certain themes.
This also where this book, the workbook has its place. By providing exercises, questions, reflection and more, I hope to support your learning journey in the best way possible. So only use this book in combination with the VUCA Leadership Survival Guide.
I am a strong believer of the 10-20-70 model that I applied also in my may roles as Learning & Development Specialist. 10% of learning is formal (book, training, workshop). 20% of learning is social learning, where you learn from others in a social setting (your manager, teams, Q&A at the coffee machine, etc. Most of the learning – 70% – is what you learn from doing; being at work and making mistakes and overcoming these.
The workbook helps to facilitate the 70% by providing material you can directly apply at and during work. The learning should mostly take place in your environment, because the VUCA issues you run into, will be exactly there.
Why This Workbook Matters
Leading in today’s world is unlike anything we have seen before. The pace of change is accelerating, uncertainty is the new normal, and complexity in decision-making is growing. In this volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment, leadership requires more than traditional strategies, it demands adaptability, resilience, and a proactive mindset.
The VUCA Leadership Survival Guide introduced key concepts, strategies, and frameworks to help leaders navigate these challenges. This workbook is designed as a practical companion, transforming insights into actionable exercises that allow you to apply VUCA leadership strategies directly to your workplace.
Rather than simply reading about leadership theories, this workbook enables you to assess your current leadership approach, refine your decision-making skills, and build habits that will prepare you for the future. Whether you are a seasoned executive or an emerging leader, this book will help you develop a structured action plan to lead confidently in a VUCA world.
How This Workbook Complements the VUCA Leadership Survival Guide
- Both books are built on years of leadership training, coaching experience, and real-world applications in organizations across various industries.
- The VUCA Leadership Survival Guide provides a structured exploration of VUCA leadership, while this workbook serves as a hands on toolkit to apply those lessons.
- The two books are meant to be used together, with each workbook chapter reinforcing the corresponding chapter in the main book.
How to Use This Workbook
Each chapter follows a structured approach, guiding you through self-assessments, reflection exercises, scenario-based learning, and action planning. The goal is to apply VUCA leadership principles directly to your work environment through small, iterative improvements.
Each chapter contains:
- Key Concepts Recap – A brief summary of the main ideas from the corresponding chapter in the VUCA Leadership Survival Guide.
- Self-Reflection Questions – To help you assess your leadership strengths and challenges.
- Practical Exercises – Hands-on activities to apply VUCA strategies in real-world scenarios.
- Action Planning – A structured way to define your next leadership steps.
