How I work

Leadership is a dynamic journey of action, reflection, and growth. Over the years, I’ve developed a comprehensive coaching approach that integrates the experiential principles of Kolb’s Learning Cycle, the humanistic insights of Carl Rogers, the structured feedback of Stakeholder Centered Coaching (SCC), and the empowering practices of Co-Active Coaching. With over 35 years of coaching & leadership experience—and as a member of the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council—I bring both practical expertise and thought leadership to help leaders grow authentically, achieve measurable progress, and make a lasting impact. This is what HBR says about leadership coaching (summarized). Based on this, as well as being a teacher since 1987, being a coach for 25+ years and having had great coaches and mentors myself, I have developed my own integrated coaching framework that has proven over and over again its ability to realize exponential growth and success for the people I coach. Here is an overview of what I make part of the coaching process.

Core Principles of My Coaching Approach

  1. Learning Through Experience (Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle)
Leadership development thrives when leaders learn by doing. I guide clients through Kolb’s four-stage cycle:
    • Concrete Experience: Engage in real-world leadership tasks and challenges.
    • Reflective Observation: Analyze what worked, what didn’t, and why.
    • Abstract Conceptualization: Translate observations into strategies and frameworks for future use.
    • Active Experimentation: Apply new strategies in practice, reinforcing learning through action.
  2. The Whole Person Perspective (Co-Active Coaching & Carl Rogers)
    • I view leaders as resourceful, creative, and whole, supporting them in aligning their leadership with their values and aspirations.
    • Inspired by Carl Rogers, I create a safe, empathetic environment that fosters exploration and authentic self-discovery.
  3. Future-Focused Growth and Feedforward (Stakeholder Centered Coaching)
    • My coaching focuses on actionable, forward-looking strategies rather than dwelling on past mistakes.
    • Stakeholders are actively involved to provide constructive feedback and create alignment between individual growth and organizational goals.
  4. Reflection as a Growth Catalyst (Kolb & Carl Rogers)
    • Reflection bridges experience and effective action. By encouraging self-awareness and deeper analysis, I help leaders uncover new insights and perspectives.
    • This reflective process strengthens decision-making, emotional intelligence, and strategic thinking.
  5. Measurable Progress and Accountability
    • Together, we define clear, measurable goals and track them using tools like stakeholder mini-surveys, performance metrics, and regular check-ins.
    • Continuous evaluation ensures leadership development is tangible, visible, and sustainable.
  6. Empathy and Authenticity
    • Authentic leadership fosters trust, engagement, and resilience. Through empathetic coaching and alignment with core values, I guide leaders toward congruence between their beliefs and actions.
    • This approach creates leaders who inspire others by being true to themselves.
  7. Action-Oriented Growth (Kolb & Co-Active Coaching)
    • Growth happens through action. I encourage leaders to experiment with new behaviors and strategies, translating insights into tangible results.
    • Every session focuses on actionable steps that drive meaningful improvements.
  8. Collaborative Stakeholder Engagement (Stakeholder Centered Coaching)
    • Leadership is relational. By engaging key stakeholders—peers, team members, and supervisors—I create a supportive, collaborative environment for growth.
    • Stakeholder feedback reinforces accountability and aligns leadership development with broader organizational objectives.
  9. Cultural and Team Alignment
    • Leadership is most effective when aligned with the organization’s culture and team dynamics. I incorporate tools to assess and improve cultural fit, ensuring leaders thrive in their specific environments.

Steps in the Leadership Growth Journey

  1. Discover and Align
    • Assess the leader’s current challenges, values, and goals.
    • Establish a shared vision for growth that aligns with organizational and personal aspirations.
  2. Set Goals and Engage Stakeholders
    • Define measurable leadership goals and involve stakeholders to ensure accountability and alignment.
  3. Experience and Reflect
    • Leaders engage in real-world leadership tasks and reflect on successes and challenges to uncover insights and opportunities.
  4. Develop and Apply Insights
    • Translate reflections into actionable strategies and apply them in leadership practices, reinforcing growth through experimentation.
  5. Measure Progress and Adapt
    • Use structured feedback tools and performance metrics to track growth and adjust strategies as needed.
  6. Sustain and Celebrate Growth
    • Develop a post-coaching plan to ensure sustained development and celebrate milestones to reinforce confidence and momentum.

Why This Approach Works

  • Grounded in Experience: Kolb’s learning principles ensure practical, action-oriented development.
  • Holistic Growth: Co-Active and humanistic principles foster authentic, meaningful leadership.
  • Measurable Results: Stakeholder feedback and structured tools track tangible leadership improvements.
  • Collaborative Relationships: Engaging stakeholders strengthens accountability and trust.
  • Sustainable Change: Reflection and iterative actions create long-lasting impact.
