Het laat je hart bonzen, je ademhaling versnellen en je voorhoofd zweten. In mijn coaching en leiderschapstrainingen is stress altijd een thema, mensen lijken zich steeds meer bewust te worden van gezondheidsrisico's, zowel fysiek als mentaal. Bekijk de TED talk, je zult verrast zijn!<\/p>\n<p>Maar terwijl stress een vijand van de volksgezondheid is geworden, suggereert nieuw onderzoek dat stress alleen slecht voor je is als je gelooft dat dat zo is. Psychologe Kelly McGonigal spoort ons aan om stress als een positief aspect te zien en laat ons kennismaken met een onbekend mechanisme om stress te verminderen: een hand uitsteken naar anderen.<\/p>\n<p>Een studie deed Kelly haar benadering van stress heroverwegen. Dit onderzoek volgde 30.000 volwassenen in de Verenigde Staten gedurende acht jaar en ze begonnen met mensen te vragen: \u201cHoeveel stress heeft u het afgelopen jaar ervaren?\u201d. Ze vroegen ook: \u201cDenkt u dat stress schadelijk is voor uw gezondheid?\u201d En toen gebruikten ze openbare overlijdensregisters om uit te zoeken wie er gestorven was..... Eerst wat slecht nieuws. Mensen die het afgelopen jaar veel stress hadden, hadden 43 procent meer kans om te sterven. Maar dat gold alleen voor mensen die ook geloofden dat stress schadelijk is voor de gezondheid. Mensen die veel stress ervoeren maar stress niet als schadelijk zagen, hadden geen grotere kans om te sterven. In feite hadden zij het laagste risico om te sterven van iedereen in het onderzoek, inclusief mensen die relatief weinig stress hadden. Nu schatten de onderzoekers dat in de acht jaar dat ze de sterfgevallen bijhielden, 182.000 Amerikanen voortijdig stierven, niet door stress, maar door de overtuiging dat stress slecht voor je is. Dit onderzoek zette me aan het denken:  Kan het veranderen van hoe je over stress denkt je gezonder maken?  En hier zegt de wetenschap ja. Als je je gedachten over stress verandert, kun je de reactie van je lichaam op stress veranderen. Ik gebruik dit concept veel in mijn coachings- en leiderschapssessies, met veel succes. Het is ook misleidend: VUCA haalt vier verschillende soorten uitdagingen door elkaar die vier verschillende soorten reacties vereisen. Dat maakt het moeilijk om te weten hoe je een uitdagende situatie moet benaderen en gemakkelijk om VUCA te gebruiken als een kruk, een manier om het harde werk van strategie en planning van je af te gooien - je kunt je immers niet voorbereiden op een VUCA-wereld, toch?<\/p>\n<p>Fout!
