It makes your heart pound, your breathing quicken and your forehead sweat. In my coaching and leadership training, stress is always a theme, people seem to become more and more aware of health risks, both physically and mentally. Watch the TED talk, you&#8217;ll be surprised!<\/p>\n<p>But while stress has been made into a public health enemy, new research suggests that stress may only be bad for you if you believe that to be the case. Psychologist Kelly McGonigal urges us to see stress as a positive, and introduces us to an unsung mechanism for stress reduction: reaching out to others.<\/p>\n<p>A study did made Kelly rethink her approach to stress.\u00a0This study tracked 30,000 adults in the United States for eight years,\u00a0and they started by asking people,\u00a0&#8220;How much stress have you experienced in the last year?&#8221; They also asked,\u00a0&#8220;Do you believe that stress is harmful for your health?&#8221;\u00a0And then they used public death records to find out who died&#8230;..\u00a0Some bad news first.\u00a0People who experienced a lot of stress in the previous year\u00a0had a 43 percent increased risk of dying.\u00a0But that was only true for the people\u00a0who also believed that stress is harmful for your health. People who experienced a lot of stress\u00a0but did not view stress as harmful\u00a0were no more likely to die.\u00a0In fact, they had the lowest risk of dying\u00a0of anyone in the study,\u00a0including people who had relatively little stress.\u00a0Now the researchers estimated that over the eight years\u00a0they were tracking deaths,\u00a0182,000 Americans died prematurely,\u00a0not from stress,\u00a0but from the belief that stress is bad for you. So this study got me wondering:\u00a0 Can changing how you think about stress make you healthier?\u00a0\u00a0And here the science says yes.\u00a0When you change your mind about stress,\u00a0you can change your body&#8217;s response to stress.
