Many of them have strong track records, solid reputations, and extensive networks. And yet, when it comes to reaching out for a conversation, uncertainty creeps in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, the more senior and experienced someone is, the harder this step often feels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The silent mistake experienced professionals make<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After redundancy, restructuring, or a long tenure in one organization, leaders often default, unconsciously, to one of two ineffective approaches:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The implicit job ask<\/strong><br>\u201cI thought I\u2019d reach out and see if there might be something for me\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The self-focused story<\/strong><br>\u201cI\u2019m looking for a new challenge, I want to learn more, I feel ready for something different\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Both approaches are understandable. Both are human. And both significantly reduce the likelihood of a meaningful conversation. Why? Because networking conversations do not start with <em>your need<\/em>.<br>They start with <em>shared relevance<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conversations come before opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Strong careers are rarely built by directly asking for roles. They are built through <strong>professional dialogue<\/strong>, conversations in which two experienced people explore context, challenges, and mutual value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially true in environments that value maturity, autonomy, and contribution under pressure. In such contexts, how you <em>enter<\/em> the conversation already signals how you will operate inside the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A well-crafted network approach does three things simultaneously:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It respects the role and time of the other person<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It positions your experience, not your uncertainty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It keeps the ask deliberately light and exploratory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is as true for a mid-career professional as it is for a former executive navigating redundancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What leaders who became redundant often underestimate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders who have recently lost their role frequently struggle not because of capability, but because of <strong>identity shift<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They move from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI am responsible for outcomes\u201d to \u201cI am asking for access\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That shift can subtly affect tone, language, and positioning. In coaching conversations, I often help leaders reframe this moment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You are not <em>asking for a favor<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are <strong>inviting a professional exchange<\/strong> based on experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of the first conversation is not re-employment. It is <strong>re-anchoring yourself in the professional ecosystem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Networking is a leadership skill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At senior levels, networking is not transactional. It is strategic. The most effective outreach messages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask for a conversation, not a decision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate contextual awareness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave room for the other person to think <em>with<\/em> you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why short, well-positioned messages outperform long explanations or emotional backstories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The mindset shift that changes everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before writing any outreach message, ask yourself one question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cIf I received this message, would I feel invited into a thoughtful conversation?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If the answer is no, revise.
