Or we talk about practical steps: updating your CV, networking, applying, rethinking your career path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is <strong>one factor that is almost never discussed<\/strong>, and yet it shapes the entire recovery process more than anything else:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Time<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1125\" height=\"1125\" src=\"https:\/\/salomons.coach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4R-Individuals-251115.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10466\" style=\"width:324px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salomons.coach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4R-Individuals-251115.webp 1125w, https:\/\/salomons.coach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4R-Individuals-251115-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/salomons.coach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/4R-Individuals-251115-600x600.webp 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1125px) 100vw, 1125px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The amount of time someone <em>has<\/em> \u2014 or <em>doesn\u2019t have<\/em> \u2014 determines how deeply they can move through the 4R phases: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reflect \u2192 Reset \u2192 Re-Align \u2192 Rise\u2122<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the truth is: <br><strong>Not everyone gets the same amount of time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why time shapes the entire 4R journey<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every person\u2019s timeline is influenced by very real, practical constraints:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>VSO end date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waiting period before social security kicks in  (The Dutch WW benefit is the national unemployment insurance that provides temporary income support when you lose your job, as long as you meet the work-history and eligibility requirements)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Duration of WW entitlement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial responsibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lifestyle impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family situation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional resilience at the moment redundancy hits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people must move quickly \u2014 because money runs out, obligations rise, or the pressure to \u201cbounce back\u201d feels overwhelming. Others are fortunate enough to have breathing space, which allows them to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reflect more deeply<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>truly reset<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explore identity and values<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experiment without panic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>build clarity rather than scramble<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>re-enter the market with intention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But here is the deeper truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>If the process goes too fast, the phases you \u201cskip\u201d will come back later \u2014 often at the worst possible moment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A real timeline: how time shapes transformation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shared with permission, anonymised)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my coachees recently reflected on his 9-month transition. When he read my article on redundancy, he said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;I could literally tick off all the 4R phases one by one. I saw my own journey mirrored in your model.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>His timeline looked like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Feb\u2013May<\/strong> (no WW yet): emotional closure \u2192 <em>Reflect &amp;<\/em> <em>Reset<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>June:<\/strong> starting as entrepreneur \u2192 first <em>Re-Align<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>July:<\/strong> family holiday \u2192 a second quiet <em>Reflect &amp;<\/em> <em>Reset<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aug:<\/strong> testing assignments \u2192 shift towards <em>Rise<\/em> after fine-tuning the inititial <em>re-alignment<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sept\u2013Nov:<\/strong> applying, lobbying, refining identity \u2192 deep <em>Re-Align <\/em>(feel the confirmation) <em>\u2192 Big Rise<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He described the experience like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThe energy to rebuild came back slowly. I didn\u2019t want to rush this process. I want to make conscious choices, not fast ones.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This clarity would not have emerged without time. And many people never get this window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Time is not a luxury. It\u2019s part of the healing.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Redundancy is not a career event \u2014 it\u2019s a <strong>psychological transition<\/strong>. And unlike organizations, human beings don\u2019t operate in neat timelines. We process identity loss, self-worth, fear, hope, and possibility in cycles. And cycles need time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders often underestimate this. Governments don\u2019t factor it in. And employees feel guilty for needing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redundancy is a form of rupture \u2014 and rupture requires recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What happens when the process is rushed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When people don\u2019t get time, they often experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>chronic self-doubt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rushed job choices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accepting roles below their potential<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>delayed emotional processing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>collapse during the onboarding of their new job<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>identity confusion (\u201cWho am I now?\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>burnout risk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>regret<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>repeating the same patterns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the skipped phases of <strong>Reflect<\/strong> and <strong>Reset<\/strong> always show up later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What happens when the process is paced well?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People who take time \u2014 even a little \u2014 often report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>renewed self-confidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a clear personal narrative<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stronger decision-making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a sharper understanding of their value<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>better role fit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>healthier boundaries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more stable energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a more meaningful career direction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>integration instead of escape<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why <strong>Re-Align<\/strong> and <strong>Rise<\/strong> become powerful instead of fragile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What leaders should realise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Redundancy is legally structured but psychologically messy.<br>Giving people <em>time<\/em> isn\u2019t a favor \u2014 it is the prerequisite for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>better outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>healthier transitions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduced future absenteeism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>better employer brand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more humane management practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And often, it costs organizations nothing \u2014 except awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What employees should realise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve been made redundant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You are not \u201cslow.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not \u201cunproductive.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not \u201cstuck.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not \u201cwasting time.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You are recalibrating. And recalibration is work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 4R journey is not linear. It moves in spirals \u2014 sometimes forward, sometimes back \u2014 but always with meaning. Give yourself the time you need, even if that time feels uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because time is not a delay.
